UAAD Executive Board Meeting
Wednesday, August 1, 2007 - 8:00 a.m.
Alexander Building, Room 2003

Members Present: Jeanne Wicks, Cheryl Hassler, Yoko Smith, Sue Walker, Tasha Armbruster, Dodie Eveleth, Marilyn Fenton, Ashley Washburn, Suzan Manthey

I. Call to Order: President Jeanne Wicks called the meeting to order at 8:00 a.m. and had board members to introduce themselves.

II. Organizational Items

  1. Schedule of Executive Meetings – The board will meet on the first Tuesday of each month at 8:00 a.m. The Alexander Building is the tentative location.
  2. Schedule of Chapter Meetings – UAAD meetings will be on the third Wednesday of each month beginning in September. The November meeting will be held on the 14th to avoid interfering with Thanksgiving break.
  3. Joint Meeting in January – The UAAD/UNOPA joint meeting will be January 16.
  4. Founders Day – The date for Founders Day is undecided.
  5. Theme for the Year – This year’s UAAD theme is “It’s All About U.” The board agreed that in order for managerial/professional employees to make time for UAAD, events should be focused on topics that help people grow personally and professionally.
  6. Bylaws – A copy of UAAD’s bylaws is located on the Web site, http://uaad.unl.edu. Descriptions of officer duties also are located here.

III. Program Suggestions –
Members suggested the following ideas for general meetings:

  • Invite Prem Paul to talk about Research
  • Choose programs that are not only interesting, but give employees tools that they can use in their daily lives
  • Make the next step/book in the Gallup Strengths Finder series available to members (D’Vee Buss from the business college may be able to lead a program.)
  • Address how to understand/work with people from different generations
  • Have Admissions staff give a presentation on what other employees can do to complement their efforts to increase enrollment and recruit students.
  • Host a program targeted at new members that addresses what new employees need to know about UNL

IV. Professional Development suggestions –
No discussion

V. Book Club –
The book club is on hold for the fall semester.

VI. Update newsletter – Ranelle Maltas
The newsletter will come out the first Friday of every month. The deadline to submit articles or announcements for the upcoming issue is the last Friday of every month. Members are encouraged to submit items. Marilyn Fenton agreed to organize the Member Spotlight section.

VII. Web site
David Sockrider, web developer in the College of Engineering, will update the Web site.

VIII. Social Consciousness Committee
UAAD’s social consciousness projects typically have an off-campus focus. Veteran members suggested projects that are easy for members to fit into their schedules, such as purchasing books for Lincoln Public Schools’ book fair, or having a mitten drive in the winter.

IX. Budget – Cheryl Hassler
Cheryl distributed copies of the tentative budget for the upcoming year. Members will vote on the proposal at the next executive board meeting.

X. Membership
Board members made these suggestions for increasing membership:

  • Ask current members to “bring a buddy” to meetings
  • Have a competition between executive board members to see who can bring the most visitors to each meeting
  • Encourage more interaction between veteran members and new members
  • Have board members greet new people at the meeting
  • Introduce new people at each meeting
  • Make time for icebreakers
  • Establish car pools to get people from City Campus to East Campus and vice versa
  • Look into the cost of reserving a shuttle bus to transport people to meetings

XI. De-stuffing party on August 3 – Jeanne Wicks
Board members were encouraged to help Jeanne sort through UAAD records and clean up old files. The de-stuffing party was at the Alexander Building.
